Herentz came to England from North Germany, and settled first in Bristol where he married Hannah Hart, who came from Plymouth. By 1845 they were living in Bath at various addresses in Widcombe and had six children of whom only four survived to adulthood. At different stages in his life he described himself as a jeweller, a general commissioning agent, and - at age 73 - a cigar manufacturer. He died in Chippenham aged 78.
