Here lies
Sarah Moses
..departed this life ...Kislev 5573
[We do not have Hebrew characters yet]
...
Aged 38 or 58
Sarah Moses was the first person to be buried here. The Bath Chronicle for 10 December 1812 records 'Died Mrs Mofes, of Stall street; her remains were interred, on Sunday, in the newly confecrated ground of the Jews, near this city'.
The Hebrew inscription on the tombstone is worn and there is lichen growth. But in English it reads 'In Memory of Sarah Moses who departed this life the ...Kislev 5573’, meaning November 1812 in the Gregorian calendar. It is likely that she probably died on Friday 24 Kislev / 27 November or Saturday 25 Kislev / 28 November. The age at death is also hard to read but is likely to be either 38 or 58.
