Barnard Barnett

1832 – 1901

B. BARN... DIED APRIL .. ...
AGED [68]

Much of the life of Barnett (Barnard) Barnett, including why he is buried in Bath is a mystery.  It is further complicated as for much of his life his first name is recorded as Barnett but on his death certificate it is shown as Barnard.

He died aged 69 on 14 April 1901 in East Dean, Gloucestershire. These dates match the remaining Hebrew fragment on the tombstone.  A few weeks before his death, the 1901 census records Barnett Barnett as a lodger, unmarried, aged 68, living on own means, at 123 Pembroke Road East Dean. It also records that he was born in Bristol and in the 1841 census Barnett Barnett, aged 9 was recorded as living in Bristol with Samuel Jones, a tailor, and his wife, neither of whom were born in England.

It is a mystery why Barnett is living with them. Because Barnett was born before 1837 there are no birth records so we do not know who his parents were. There is an Isaac Barnet, tailor, and his family living in Bristol in  the 1851 census but we do not know if  they are related. In the 1861 and 1881 census Barnett is recorded as a visitor with this family in London.

The only connection with Bath is also comes from Barnett's death certificate. Present at his death was Simon Sperber, living in Cinderford, East Dean. Simon Sperber was the treasurer of the Bath Synagogue in 1900 and in August 1900 married Katie Franks, the daughter of Michael Franks a prominent member of the Jewish Community. The marriage record gives Simon's address as Cinderford and he is recorded as living there is the 1901 census. Did he arrange for Barnett to be buried in Bath?

The National Probate Calendar 1901 records that Barnett  Barnett of 4 Pembroke Road Cinderford Gloucestershire left effects of £1016 2s 8d and that probate was given in Gloucester 18 May 1to  Hyam Barnett, gentleman. Presumably Hyam was a relative but our research to date has not established the connection.
Much of Barnett's life is still a mystery. There is no trace of him in the 1851, 1871 or 1891 census. Where his is recorded in the census, his occupation is listed as general merchant. But on his death certificate it is recorded as retired Jeweller.

Without a birth certificate, we do not know who his parents were. A Joseph Barnett dies in Bristol in 1840 in Bristol. Was this Barnett's father?
And who was Hyam Barnett? The only trace is in the 1891 census at 12 Cutler’s Terrace, Islington: Mary Barnett, aged 79, widow, living on own means, born in London, and son Hyman, aged 59, living on own means, born at Bristol.

Simon Sperber, who was present at Barnett's death, was born in Lwow in 1871. Living close to him in Cinderford was Marcus Barnett who in 1901 married Florence Ginzburg who lived in Bath. Marcus and his brother Abraham were both born in 'foreign parts'. Were they distant relatives of Barnett?
