Henriette Leon

1823  – 1894

Here lies
A worthy and beloved wife
True and straight were her words
Torah from her lips was as sweet as honey
Kindness and mercy were her pleasures
Daily conscientiously attended to the duties of her household
Until illness prevented her any more
Her pure soul departing unto eternity
Devastated and bitterly weeping were her husband and children
Who now must leave the beauty of the home and keep it going alone
Yenta wife of Abraham ben Yosef Levi
71 years of age died on the 22nd Ellul 5655

SGL = Segal The name Segal is said to be derived from Hebrew segan leviyyah (assistant to the Levites)

HENRIETTE LEON
BORN AT HILDESHEIM JUL 26. 5583 AM
DIED AT BATH SEPTEMBER 22. 5684,
AGED 71
MERCY AND TRUTH ARE MET TOGETHER; RIGHTEOUSNESS AND PEACE HAVE KISSED EACH OTHER. PSALM LXXXV, VERSE 10

Henriette Meyerhof was born in Hildeshiem Germany in 1823.  She arrived in England in December 1859. By the 1861 census she is married to Abraham Leon, and they are living in Sheffield, with Abraham's brother and his wife. They had two children, Joseph and Golda while in Sheffield. Abraham was a successful knife and cutlery maker.

There is no record for the family in the 1871 census so we are unsure when or why they moved to Bath. Perhaps for health reasons as Henriette suffered from chronic bronchitis. The earliest record we have is an entry for September 1879 in the Bath synagogue minute book for A Leon.

By the 1881 census Abraham, a Steel Manufacturer, and Henrietta are recorded with Golda, now aged 16 a pupil at Bath High School and Joseph, now aged 19 an undergraduate at London University. Together with a cook and two servants they lived at Lime Lodge, Oldfield Park, a large house and garden, which Abraham rented for £55 pa.

Henriette died on 22 September 1894 at Lime Lodge, Wells Road, aged 71. Cause of death was bronchitis, acute for 17 years. Her son Joseph was present at her death
