THE LORD CALLED SAMUEL AND HE

I SAMUEL III CHAP 4 VERSE 3

Samuel Jacobs was born in 1801 in London. He married Phoebe Levy, born in London in 1799, at the Great Synagogue London on 31 October 1821.  They had  one son, and eight  daughters, all born in London.

In 1836 Samuel, a clothes salesman, registered an insurance policy on 10 South Street, Manchester Square, London. The family are living at this address in the 1841 census.

Samuel's  business must have prospered as by 1845 he has registered insurance polices at two other premises in London. Their eldest son, Philip, died in 1845 and is buried in Brady Street Jewish Cemetery. There is no record of the family in England in  the 1851 census.  But there is  record of Samuel, Phoebe and four  of their daughters- Harriet, Rachel, Julia and Maria - returning from Victoria, Australia in March 1855.  A record of their arrival in Victoria has not been found but three  of their daughters were married in Victoria between 1850 and 1854 (see life story below).   Did the family go to Australia to find husbands for some of the daughters?

By the 1861 census  Samuel, Phoebe and three of their then unmarried daughters are back living in Paddington London in the 1861 census. We do not know why they moved to Bath. Perhaps because of Samuel's health? Samuel is registered in the Bath Directories 1862-6 as a Gentleman living at 12 Bladud Buildings. He died there in 1866.

The Bath Chronicle of Thursday 8 Feb 1866 reports:
'Feb. 4, at 12, Bladud-buildings, Bath, Mr. Samuel Jacobs, late of Connaught-terrace, London, in the 65th year of his age.'

The Probate Register records that died a rich man - effects at death were under £5,000, which is £500,000 in 2020 terms.

Phoebe and  their three unmarried  daughters, Harriet, Rachel and Julia are buried in Bath. We know from Samuel's will that they also had 5 married daughters: 3 went to Australia and 2 to Austria.
Samuel left his estate to Phoebe and his 3 unmarried daughters, Harriet, Rachel and Julia. As well as all his possessions, including watches, jewellery and musical instruments. His will lists debentures in the Victoria Government, Australia,  Turkish Government bonds and bank deposits in London. He left £100 to each of his 5 married daughters
The 3 married daughters who went to Australia were:
Hannah, who married Abraham Edward Alexander in 1850 in Victoria.  He was a wine and spirit merchant. They had 9 children and  lived in Mosman, New South Wales where Hannah died in 1913 aged 86.
Alice married Lewis  Barnett in 1851 in Victoria Australia. They had 4 children. Lewis died in 1906 in Victoria. It is not known when or where Alice died.
Amelia married Emanuel  Davis in 1854 in  St Kilda Victoria Australia when she was just 16.   They had many children (10?).  She died there in December 1870  aged just 34 and is buried in the Jewish Cemetery.  After her death Emanuel and 4 of his children returned to England where he was a partner in the  firm of Eades and Son of the Westminster Works Birmingham.

The 2  married daughters who lived in Austria were:
Frances who married Sigmond  Strakosch who was born in Moravia.  They were married in Victoria, Australia where their first children were born. They then went to the USA before moving to Vienna where they  had 3 children. Frances died in Vienna in 1914 and Sigmond in 1924.
Maria married  Ferdinand Strakosch,  Sigmond's brother, in 1866 in Moravia. They also  lived in Vienna and had 5 children. To date we have not found any more information about them.
